OVERVIEW
Lilith is the main character. Book 1 follows her journey through the dangerous world on the surface of the planet, detailing her experiences as well as her attempts to return home underground. Her story begins at a seemingly-innocuous theatre freak show, where vampires poisoned by human blood begin tearing everyone to pieces. She is saved by a rather unlikely hero: Silver, the taciturn werewolf. They are reluctantly pushed together by fate and circumstance.
BIOGRAPHY
Lilith grew up underground, brought up mostly by her mother, after her father left them when she was 8. Her father’s absence remains a sore point for Lilith, partially due to her mother’s avoidance of the subject. Unbeknownst to Lilith, her father continued to support both her and her mother financially, and as a result she lacked little in life, even managing — through her father’s connections — to attend an elite Lower Hall school.
At school, Lilith was always a strong student, clever enough to get by without doing much work. At the age of 18, she was selected to take part in the Advanced Youth Programme, a rather mysterious programme which seems to be a specialized kind of summer school. She planned to attend the AYP during her gap year between school and university, but her plans were disrupted by her forced stay above ground.
At the beginning of Book 1, Lilith has just recently turned 19.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Lilith has the classic pale skin from having grown up underground. She has shoulder-blade-length straight brown hair, and brown eyes. She is rather slimly built, and has very little muscle on her bones.
PERSONALITY & TRAITS
With no other siblings and a working mother, Lilith developed into a headstrong, impulsive and independent child, and these qualities have stayed with her as she has grown older.
On the plus side, she is flexible and adaptable, managing to come to terms with life above ground far quicker than any would expect. She is logical, and enjoys maths and similarly structured disciplines, having little patience for art.
With close friends, Lilith has the tendency to tease, although her playful side is hidden to anyone she doesn’t know well.

RELATIONSHIPS
• Silver
Silver rescues Lilith during the Affected Parade massacre. Their relationship is oddly co-dependent despite the short length of time they have known each other, something which remains as yet unexplained.

Emma buys tickets to the Affected Parade as a birthday present for Lilith. The two girls are best friends, and have gone to school together ever since. There is some recent underlying resentment in their friendship, though, as Emma is envious that Lilith was selected for the AYP and she wasn’t.
• Arlene Gray
Arlene is Lilith’s mother, and brought Lilith up alone after her husband left when Lilith turned 8. She and Lilith are very close.

He is Lilith’s father. He cares about Lilith, but hasn’t seen her in years.
